One of the hardest activities to maintain in a home based business is getting organized and staying focused.  Using a personal organizer for your home business helps you maintain your focus and stay organized.  It also allows you to track your progress on business tasks that need to be completed as well as having all your business contact information in one area.

I use my personal organizer to track the goals I’ve established for my business, both the short term as well as the long term ones.  I also record new ideas that I might have for marketing and advertising.   Then I can research the ideas and decide if it would be worth the time and money to implement one or more of the ideas.

There are all kinds of ways to keep your business information together such as spreadsheets, appointment books and calendars that would probably do the same thing, but there is something to be said for having all your business information together and visible at a glance.  I like having my tasks to be completed, business goals and business contacts in one area.  It is easier for me to stay focused and organized with everything in one place as opposed to having to sort through several books or spreadsheets to find all the information I need.

Using a personal organizer easily allows me to keep track of birthdays, anniversaries and holidays.  The initial investment is going to be the biggest cost because usually you can order refills for a fraction of the original cost.

Starting a home business can be quite an exciting prospect.  Home based entrepreneurs are free to set their own hours, avoid long commutes, eat at home and even go to work in their pajamas, if that’s what they wish to do.

Personal reasons aside, it can even be more economical.  Home based owners don’t have to pay rent for office space, business licensing is generally cheaper, and labor is often provided by family members or friends rather than employees.

Yet despite all the benefits, running a home business is often far from easy.  The most stressful part of starting a business is knowing where to start.  New business owners will have tons of questions, such as:

  • Do I need a license to work at home?
  • How do I advertise?
  • Do taxes apply to my income?
  • Where do I get supplies or materials?

For many new home business owners answers to these questions often come simply through trial and error.  However, look to local, state and federal small business associations which offer a wealth of information and advice on starting, sustaining and growing home businesses.

Figuring out how to get their business off the ground is only the first challenge.  Home business owners say some of the biggest challenges are meshing work and home life in one building.  It can often be difficult to separate and prioritize home responsibilities with work responsibilities.

Start simply, figure out what works and then try to improve on it.

Imagine that you have spent hours developing a great looking website, you’ve uploaded your website to the Internet and patiently wait for people to start visiting your website. You can have the best looking website around but if nobody knows it is there, you won’t have much success on the Internet. There are a couple of easy ways you can generate free website traffic that will increase your chances of being successful. All you need is the drive and perseverance to research your market and then spend the time required to drive traffic to your Internet business.

Online forums and social networking communities are an excellent way to develop relationships with potential customers. Search for and join the forums or social networking groups that deal with the particular product or service your company provides. Spend some time in the groups and forums answering people’s questions. If people in these communities know that you are a person that will help them with a problem or question, you will rapidly establish yourself as a subject matter expert in your field and build a solid reputation for your company.

If you are like I am and work from home, your home office can become an unorganized monster just waiting to swallow you alive.  Organizing your home office does take some discipline but once you get it organized it is much easier to get your every day business activities completed.  I am a stacker, which means that I love to stack papers, books and other items into neat little piles.  Unfortunately, I then have to spend a great deal of time sorting through the different stacks looking for that one paper or article that I need.

The other day I went into my home office with the mind set that I will be organized and no more stacking.  I went through the stacks of papers and started a simple filing system.  I placed each piece of paper that I wanted to keep into their appropriate file folders.  It was amazing to me how many papers I had kept that I really didn’t need for my business (but that’s a subject for a different article.)

In my opinion, the hardest part of organizing your home office is to actually do something with each piece of paper such as file it or throw it away, but don’t stack it.  A trick that I learned a number of years ago in a time management class was to place a check mark in the top corner of a piece of paper each time you handled it, read it or moved it.

I think having a nice clean office boosts productivity because I’m no longer distracted by stacks of papers and can focus on accomplishing business activities instead of sorting through piles of papers.

We would all probably have slightly different answers to the question, what is networking?  Basically, networking is building relationships and interacting with other people.  It used to be that you networked with individuals in your immediate, surrounding area, but now with social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc., it is now possible to network with individuals all over the world.

You’ll need to pick a social networking website or a combination of websites that work well for you and your business.  The problem some business owners are now facing, is with so many options you can literally spend most of your day posting on Facebook or sending out tweets and you no longer have time to perform your business tasks.  Networking, for any business owner, is extremely important but finding a balance between the time you spend networking and the time you spend on your business activities is not always easy.

As a business owner, you can outsource the more routine business activities that need to be performed during the month or you can outsource the social networking aspect of your business.  As my dad used to say, put pencil to paper and figure out which is the most cost effective way to go.  We all have the same amount of time during the day and there are only so many things we can do during those hours.

Depending on the type of business or service you provide, face-to-face networking might be more effective than online networking.  So keep networking when you go to the store, church or participate in community activities and find a good balance between online networking and completing business activities.

There are a number of ways you can set up a website.  Here are a few options for setting up a website:

Online website builder – these builders allow you to use a pre-made template that you can use to set up your own website.  Typically, you will have limited control over what you can change and customize but you won’t have to learn hypertext markup language (HTML) or other web page coding to use them.

WordPress – WordPress is an excellent content management system and relatively easy to learn with a great support forum.  There are thousands of WordPress templates that you can use and customize to suit your needs.  If you want to do customization of an existing template, you will need to have some website coding knowledge.

Your website navigation should be designed to make it easy for your visitors to find the information you are presenting.  You also want to make your navigation links search engine friendly so the search engines will “spider” and index your site.  Search engines are referred to as  “bots” or “spiders” that visit a website that has been submitted to it and “spiders” through the links on the website.  This is what a link looks like:

<a href=”http://www.yourvirtualassistantsolutions.com/website-navigation/”>Website Navigation</a>

When the search engines visit your website they are looking for the href tags and then will follow them to the other pages, indexing them as it goes.  If the search engines don’t find any href tags, then it will stop looking through the website and will not index any other pages for the website.  Developing a good linking strategy should be a major part of your web design to increase your website’s search engine ranking.

One of the basics of a website is content.  The content you provide on your website should be relevant and provide the reader with information that is of value to them.  Informative information is how you achieve higher rankings in the search engines because your visitors will start to see you as an expert and continue to return to your site for more information.

The more informative your website content is will also help you build link popularity which is another way to increase your search engine rankings.  If you have good content, other sites will want to link to you.  If you don’t have interesting or current content on your site, you don’t have a very good chance of increasing your rankings in the search engines.

Before you design and develop your business website, you will need to look at the first of the basics of a website – strategy. Even before you write a word of content, you’ll need to determine what is the overall purpose and objective of your website. Are you going to use your website for marketing purposes, to sell a physical product or both? What makes your website more attractive than your competitors to encourage visitors to return and purchase products from you multiple times? You also need to figure out how you want to generate income from your site. Do you want to sell advertising space, collect membership fees, sell affiliate programs or sell your own product? What are your strengths and weaknesses in each of these areas and how will maintain a competitive edge over your competition?

Once you have answered the questions above, you can then narrow your website focus which will determine the content and overall website design. There are basically two types of websites: informational or e-commerce. Informational websites will usually make their money from advertising, commissions and membership fees. E-commerce websites on the other hand make their money be selling a product or service.

You need to keep the overall objective of your website very focused. Your visitors are going to be looking for a website that provides them with the information or product they were searching for so having a website that covers a little bit of everything will not give your visitors the impression that you are a subject matter expert in your area of business. The more focused your website is the greater chance you have of customers returning to your website in the future.

The first step to designing and developing a successful website is to start with the basics of a website – strategy.

With today’s interactive technology, the public expects businesses to have a website, even if the website just provides the very basics and a way to contact the business.  The benefits of having a website for business owners are numerous.  The public routinely searches the Internet for businesses and telephone numbers as opposed to picking up a phone book.  If your business does not have a website, you won’t be found during Internet searches but your competitor might.

One of the most immediate benefits of having a website is that your business is now open 24/7, 365 days a year even if your physical office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  A website allows consumers to have access to your company information when it is convenient for them such as in the middle of the night or on weekends.  Not everyone lives in the same time zone or has the same work schedule so increasing the exposure your business receives can also increase your profits without a huge increase in your overhead costs.
